Fatherhood is no Cakewalk

Well it's that time of year again.  We've honoured our mothers the best we could, but now its dad's turn. Father's day is a special time to thank your dad for all he's done by giving him a nice tie before leaving him alone with the television.  And how convenient that the World Cup just happens to overlap with Father's day this year. Well played FIFA, well played.

Every year I stupidly ask my father what he wants for Father's Day, and the reply is always the same... "an ice cold beer and no one in here." I feel like this rings true for most dads even if they won't admit it. Regardless,  it's a fun day to appreciate dad's everywhere, and they definitely deserve it.  After all, being a dad is no cakewalk. It's very difficult to have to figure out how to post on your son's Facebook wall, and come up with the ever so clever "dad jokes" that always result in an eye roll or two.

Here at Family Cakes, Andrew and Daniel have shared with me their expectations for this upcoming Father's Day...

Andrew will first remind his wife that it's Father's Day before heading out to a nice lunch with the family. Afterwards he will remind his wife that it's Father's Day again, and enjoy groveling for the rest of the day.

Daniel, after just finding out that Father's Day is coming, and was excited to see the his kids will probably make him a Father's Day cake

Whatever it is you're doing this Father's Day, we hope it's a great one for all you dads out there!

New new new Intern!

Hello fellow bloggers and cake enthusiasts,

My name is Kelli and I'm the newest intern here at Family Cakes!  I'm from the wondrous city of Philadelphia, where the cheesesteaks are as good as they say and where you actually do feel like Rocky running up the art museum steps.  I am currently going into my third year at Elon University in North Carolina, where I am studying Marketing and Entrepreneurship. In addition to my marketing studies I also run my own cake business from home during the summer, but I'm so excited to be here surrounded by cakes that make mine look like piles of "rubbish" (putting my new English vocabulary to use).  I am studying/working abroad here in London for 8 weeks, so I'm hoping that's enough time to pick up a little British accent. I know it's probably not, but a girl can dream. In all serious, I am loving the city so far and I'm hoping that I will be able to come back in the future.

While I'm here I'm hoping to sharpen my marketing skills, and help to get Family Cakes the attention it deserves! Everyone has been so nice and helpful, and I'm so excited to be working here.  This is a torturous place to work, though, seeing as I have to smell delicious cakes all day long. Ugh life is so hard...

I'm going to be keeping up with the blog posts and helping with all of the social media for Family Cakes, so feel free to comment, pin, retweet, like, share, etc. with all your friends, so they can be just as impressed as I am with these amazing treats.  It is very nice to virtually meet you all, I'll be talking to you soon!

Cheers! (did I use that right?)

It's a Rhubarb State of Mind!

Makes you Proud to be a British Rhubarb!

Yes it is Spring time and flowers are blossoming. When walking this weekend I was astounded by the amount of bluebells carpeting the forest floor.  For some strange reason, I don't have to give any excuse to be strange!, the bluebells made me think of Rhubarb. Is it a vegetable is it a fruit, I don't really care because its going to be an ingredient in one of our cakes!!

This morning I grabbed Lindy, my other chief chef Lunatic, then put her down in the Kitchen. There we messed around for hours before we decided to do any work and Voila! It was created! 40 minutes later we took it out of the oven, and whilst it lay on the cooling tray we discussed life, whilst looking out of the window at the sunshine.

Coffee was made and the time was here for tasting. Will we have our next best creation, will all our dreams of Rhubarb come true, what socks should  I wear tomorrow!! All this was running through my mind as Lindy dusted the cake ready for me to cut with my pallet knife.  I was handed a piece. Without further ado I popped it in my mouth, flavours danced across my tongue, mmmm yes this was very nice, I like it! Clotted cream was found and dolloped on top of a another piece. Coffee washed down the light crumbling sponge.  Vincenzo peered at me over the rim of his coffee cup and as he placed it on the table a smile tickled over his face..... A success!

You may think from this blog that we have a rather relaxing time here at the FCC. Well post Easter rush is where we are and we are enjoying the lull. Nest week it will be business as usual mad dashing around wondering which cake will be first or last or even if the first should be last! Well this is me signing off for a while. Have a good week. Buy some Rhubarb and give it some love.....
