HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
For many of you, today is just another regular Thursday, but for many American's, today is special because it is Thanksgiving! I know that some of you are not familiar with this holiday, so I will give a little bit of some background.
Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November as a day of giving thanks for the blessings they have received over the past year, as well as a day for friends and family to gather together with plenty of food, drinks, and memories. With Thanksgiving comes tradition, so here are a list of some of the "typical" traditions that people follow every Thanksgiving:
1: Turkey and Pumpkin pie
The most significant symbols of Thanksgiving are the FOODS! A traditional Thanksgiving dinner usually centered with a large roasted stuffed turkey, with side dishes such as: mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and green bean casserole. People usually have pies for dessert on Thanksgiving day, among which pumpkin pie is the most popular one. Basically, Thanksgiving is the time of the year you are allowed to enjoy lots of delicious dishes without considering too much of getting weight.
2:Football, American Football that is
Besides eating turkey and making yourself so full that you get nervous that you won't be able to eat the delicious desert's, their are other important traditions such as NFL games and The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. During ancient harvest festivals, people usually celebrated with games and sports, this tradition has been carried on even to this day! So, it is very typical for families to gather on their couches in front of the fire and digest their large meal while watching the many football games played throughout the course of the day. Also, retailer, Macy's, holds their traditional Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City full of different floats, performances, and celebrities!
3:Giving Thanks
As previously said, Thanksgiving is a day of giving thanks for the blessings they have received over the past year, so people will gather together before dinner and give thanks to what they have. It is my favorite part because giving thanks to what I have makes me appreciate my life more, and it also feels great to share your blessings with people you love.
4:Black Friday (shopping)
After a great day of celebrating with foods, drinks and memories, the holidays continues with the Black Friday sales! Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving day and it is the biggest shopping day of the year in the U.S. Many stores have promotions on Black Friday, it is a great opportunity to shop for Christmas presents. After a day of eating on Thursday, it seems to be a good idea to walk around and do lots of shopping.
Happy Thanksgiving and I hope everyone can have a great day!
